I love images of people in their own environment, I could look at this stuff all day long. Anyhoo- check it out!

The canon 50mm 1.2 was a “lens present” to myself.  About once a year, I hold my breath, cover my eyes, and click “buy” at B&H.  Slowly I am building a collection of lenses that I will be buried with. 

I was looking for some other photos and came across these -I think this was the afternoon I got the lens and took Sky out to the back to try it out.  They were all shot at 1.2 -which is so lovely AND so tricky.  (As with anything that is worth the work.)

Check it out! I have twenty photos up in Rockridge Kids. When I first moved back to Oakland after 3 years in Miami, and was cruising around with my 5-month old Will, I found Rockridge Kids. At that time, the amazing Amy Perl was up on the walls -I pretty much ran home and emailed her right away, saying I loved her work and we should be friends. Over the years, many other photographers have come through the doors -last one was my awesome Little Bird School Photography partner, Kristen Policy. So it is with honor that I have had my rite of passage and now show my stuff there.

Stop in and buy some toys for your kids! It is a great establishment; I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the owner and all the cool people that work there. And… if you see my postcard at the register -read the back! You will get a cool gift from your portrait shoot.

Then I put the camera down on this log and loved what I saw through the view finder. These are taken with my digital camera:

A few weeks ago I shot a roll of 12 exposures with my old bronica. It has been…. almost years since I’ve used film. (Except holga.) I got these back from the lab today and just fell in love with the look. I had a realization that film matches my memories better than digital does. Film has a softer, warmer quality -a little fuzzy on the edges. If I was to look back at this morning with the kids, it would look like film in my head.

I know I am not alone in rediscovering film, so many photographers are doing it these days. A resurgence is going on! I started in photography when I was 15, working in the school darkroom with my best friends, rolling our own film, obsessively waiting for the film to dry after developing… Then I built many of my own darkrooms once I left school and kept at it until around 2005 with my first digital SLR. So today it felt like I was seeing an old friend for the first time in many years.

Last week I went to a workshop taught by Anna Kuperberg and Amy Deputy, two amazing artists and teachers.  It was the first photography workshop I have ever been to.  Yes, I went to WPPI this year -but that is so different.  I came away with so many wonderful gems from these two days -gifts that will help me grow and improve my work.  And I also got the gift of a picture taken by Anna!  See how happy I am?  I can’t even pretend be cool about it.  She is someone I really admire and now I have a picture of Me by Her.
